Barbara Bush Story

Yesterday was April 17, 2018. Like every year, it was my father’s birthday. If he were still alive, he would’ve been 80 years old.

But yesterday Barbara Bush passed away at the age of 92, which reminded me of this story.

Walkers Point

The Bush family owns a house in Kennebunkport, Maine – it has been in the Bush family for more than a century. Actually, the name of the house, a compound, is Walker’s Point. It just sits out there in the water, by itself. Nothing flashy. But it’s there and we know who lives there in the summer.

Have I actually seen them up close? If you drive by the house and they’re inside, sometimes you see the grandchildren jumping off the cliff and into the Atlantic. Of course, the secret service are all around keeping the grandchildren safe.

But I have a little story of my own to tell. It was probably 10 years ago that we went up to Kennebunkport for “Christmas Prelude.” It’s where the center of town gets ready for Santa to arrive by Lobstah boat, where they light and decorate the big pine tree in the middle of Dock Square, and the local shops set up Christmas themed arts and crafts for the kids to do all weekend.

Lobster Boat

We went into town for dinner to be in the spirited atmosphere, when my youngest son, at the time he was four years old, decided to walk around while we were waiting for our table to be ready. It was already dark, cold, and drizzling outside.

We were looking into a store window and walking toward us from the left were three people. I remember they were tall and I pushed my son and I closer to the window to give the people more space.

When I looked up to see them, that’s when I noticed it was Barbara Bush and two of the secret service men (they were a little behind her). She walked right up to us and started talking.

HOLY SHIIIIIII

First impression – this woman is tall! Second impression – much prettier in person than on TV.

“Hello there, young man, what’s your name?”

She didn’t know that my son was THE SHYEST PERSON IN THE WORLD AND WOULD NOT SPEAK.

I told her his name. She seemed to have liked it because she mentioned the umbrella he was holding was part of his name and then she remarked about this rain boots – also being part of his name.

She told us to stay dry, nice meeting us, and then she continued on her way.

I did take pictures while she was talking with my son – or I should say, while she was talking to herself. Of course, they were on my phone from 10 years ago. Tried to find a copy here on my laptop…

You’ll just have to take my word that again, this is a true story.

If you liked this little article, I would be grateful if you shared it with your friends.
