We celebrate July Fourth as America’s birthday, for the freedom from Great Britain. John Adams said of Fourth of July celebrations, “It will be celebrated… with pomp and parade… bonfires and illuminations… from one end of this continent to the other.”

I think that pretty much sums up what we Americans do. We celebrate with backyard cook-outs with family and friends; we eat burgers and hot dogs with ketchup and mustard because that’s how Americans eat their cook-outs. We spit out black seeds from our half slices of watermelon (if you can find watermelon WITH seeds) to see who can spit the farthest. We supervise our kids and grandkids when they light up sparklers, just in case. We throw frisbees and grab sodas out of a cooler filled with ice. Later, we bring mosquito repellent along with our lawn chairs and blankets in search for the best place to plop down and wait for it to get dark… Excitement with each flickering light and boom in the sky, we rate each firework with a scale from 1-10. But honestly, every firework is spectacular!

Happy Birthday, America.
