Around six years ago while we were having lunch at a hibachi restaurant one of the funniest experiences of my life unfolded.
It was around 2:00pm and there was only one other couple having lunch.
My son was on the phone with his “girlfriend” and wished her a happy birthday.
The hibachi cook must’ve heard him say “birthday” because a few moments later out walked a waitress with a parasol in her hand singing “happy birthday” in Japanese.
We were excited as we were going to sing to the other table, thinking it was one of their birthdays.
But the waitress kept walking closer towards our table. I thought to myself, there is NO WAY they could be coming to our table. Clearly it was none of our birthdays… I looked behind us to see if maybe another family had walked in while we were busy eating. Nope. As the realization set in I couldn’t help but start laughing thinking that no one would ever believe this.
I looked at my daughter and said, “Oh no… I think they think it is your brother’s birthday.”🤣
It was hysterical. I whispered to my son, “whatever they do, just go with it.” He gave me a puzzled look (all I could do was laugh, no way could I control it by this point – bad parenting 101) and he played along with it. He was 11 years old at the time.
They made him hold the parasol and stand on top of his bar stool as he spun around while they sang (still in Japanese) and handed him a cup of ice cream with a candle to blow out.
My daughter and I were laughing uncontrollably with tears running down our faces.
It remains the single most funniest moment that I was fortunate enough to experience.
