“Three years ago we purchased a house divided into two separate apartments.

Our son, daughter-in-law and two granddaughters live upstairs. My husband and I reside on the main floor.

So far it is working out. Does anyone else live in “creative arrangements?”

What are the pluses and what are the things to look out for?” -Anonymous

  1. My daughter and son-in-law built a house (connected by a stairwell at the back for a two storey home for myself). I get to be a part of my grandchildren’s lives every day; we eat together; help eachother out and I still work part-time. A win-win situation for all of us!

  2. We built a basement apt into our house plans. It gives us walk out living space and extra income if we need it. So far my son and his family used it for about 2 yrs and there is plans for our grandfather to move in when the time is right. Privacy is a key issue make sure you set parameters. Ours has laundry, a masters bed, bath walk in, kitchen living, private walk in. As we age we felt it would b a way to stay in our home longer. Rent upstairs/live downstairs no steps but for now it has been a blessing for those needing it

  3. I would love to have a house big enough to share with all three of my children an gran kids & great gran kids. We all have our separate lives now. I am afraid we might get on each other’s last nerve. But I love the idea.

    1. My sister and Bruce ha d a house built to do just that. My sister ,her husband and daughter with terminal bone cancer live downstairs. Her other daughter ,her husband their son and his partner live upstairs. It’s a marvellous arrangement all have separate lives and space. All there for one another in emergency. Perfect. Would love that myself.

    3. I bought a multigenerational house with a separate apartment. My son and daughter-in-law lived in the main house and I lived in the apartment. Completely separate living arrangements. It lasted less than 6 months. There was no conflict or problems. They simply didn’t want to share a multigenerational house although we had discussed the arrangement many times over the span of a year. I was left holding the bag in a house much too big for one person and with a broken heart.

  4. My husband & I live in a 3 bedroom mobile home. Our friend who claims us as his aunt & uncle rents a bedroom from us for about a fifth of what he’d have to pay for an apartment in our area. I do his laundry & cook for him now and then. Infrequently he’ll cook for himself. This arrangement has been a blessing for the three of us. Also he is very tech savy & has done some amazing stuff with installing lights in our kitchen & on our porch I can turn on & off via my phone.
