Incontinence as We Age

“I have self diagnosed, as I deal with this all day/every day by changing underwear up to three times a day…

The husband would tease me if he knew. My sisters acknowledge “having accidents when laughing, coughing, etc.” but no one commits to wearing products. This worries me 24/7, every second.

Also, the problem with “old age stink,” nonenol is the reason for this odor. Even after a thorough shower, that odd, stinky odor persists. Copy/pasted the following from the internet:

“As the skin grows weaker, its natural oils oxidize more quickly, producing nonenal. Because it isn’t water soluble, nonenal can remain on the skin despite thorough washing. Therefore, the smell persists on the body and on fabrics, even in extremely clean environments. One Japanese skincare brand claims to have found a botanical combination that does the trick: persimmon and green tea. The tannins in persimmon extract help to break down and wash away nonenal, and the antioxidants in Japanese green tea are believed to detoxify the skin and extend the deodorizing effects. The company offers this combination in many different forms, such as bar soap, body wash, etc.”

The question remains, what are you doing to help yourself with these two issues?” – Anonymous

  1. I just wear the pads. Don’t want to bother with meds, surgery, etc. But I appreciate knowing where that smell comes from and how to get rid of it. I am gonna try some of that Japanese soap. Thanks!

  2. Make sure that you do not have recurring UTI or bladder infection, both of which cause an odour. And both cause incontinense

  3. I had a bladder sling operation. Best thing ever. I will occasionally wear a panty liner just in case. But I haven’t had to use the just in case!

  4. I take oxybutynin, it really works and have had Physical Therapy to learn exercises. Both have helped tremendously. I wear a light pad, usually Poise number 3. I don’t really think about my leakage anymore as I feel it’s under control.

  5. It got pretty bad with my bladder letting go whenever…..so I was vaginally “operated” on to put my bladder in a sort of mesh sling and I have had no problems since and it’s been many years. Don’t just put up with it. There are many things that can be done.

  6. One reason we have incontinence is our pelvic wall weakens. Try doing pelvis exercises. You can sit and do kegal exercises as you work on your computer. I’ve done this and it is helping. I also wear ‘dribble pads’ (pantie liners) designed for accidents.

  7. Don’t let yourself become a victim of age! There are Doctors and there are appliances and lots of help out there I had surgery and it didn’t work found a Urologist and I’m fixed! Keep moving forward!

  8. About six years ago, I was diagnosed with overactive bladder. I entered a study at the University of New Mexico called the Rosetta study. By chance, I would have botox injections every few months or have an interstim unit implanted in my hip with leads going throughout my pelvic area. The unit sends small electrical waves through the system that controls my bladder. It worked perfectly, but now the battery is slowing down and I’m wearing pads. I’ll be having the battery replaced this month and expect to go another five years free of leaks.

  9. I had this issue when I had my hysterectomy. I walked up steps, sneezed or laughed too hard…it was on,lol. Went to my doctor and he found my bladder had slipped backwards and had adhered to my intestines. So,5 days in the hospital and 227 stitches later,he did a bladder suspension. He said “That should hold you for awhile.” That was 1992…..at 62 now,I have noticed there is a small leak in the “dam”….here we go again, dont you love getting old? I have been using liner specific for bladder leakage…they work ok.

  10. I would love to know the name of the Japanese company so that I can offer their products to family members who need them.

    1. I found some on Amazon – BoxCave Persimmon and Green Tea soap – there is more then one bar by this company, and there are several companies that sell this kind of soap on Amazon and from other companies, there seem to be a lot.

  11. Make yourself “go” before your body tells you that you need to go. Just wear the pads or panties. Medicine is available. And the forever recommended exercise kegel.I did better when I was going to the gym and specifically exercising for abdomen.

  13. The Doctor is a great start!! Then there is wonderful under wear you can use without others knowing!! So many things you can do!! Good luck with this!! Praying you will find your way

    1. I had a hysterectomy with pelvic floor repair due to urinary incontinence in 2017. It was the best thing I ever did! My doctor did it transvaginally so there were no abdominal incisions. I still have to wear a light pad but I know that most of my dribbling is due to me waiting too long to use the bathroom as a visiting nurse.
