Anonymous asks, “Is it okay to leave a job for another job only to find out you want to go back to your previous job…

Are you a failure in wanting to go back, or will I be looked upon as a failure in doing so?

I traveled cross-country for my current job but want to return home and go back to my old job.”

  1. I did this once and it was the best thing for my career. It was a good experience and I gained all my seniority back. You shouldn’t look at this as a failure, but rather, as a strategic job move. Good luck!

  2. My motto….. Don’t look back. You’re not going that way. But that’s for me. You need to do what’s right for you & your family.

  3. I never go back to anything. I just keep going. You seem unsure of yourself. You are concerned about what others think…..big headache there. Others aren’t living your life. But after having said goodbye once to you, you have to expect there will be a lot of conversations about you behind your back if you return. People are nervous to get close to someone who goes away….so they may not be as close as they used to be. Why not get a great recommendation from them instead and thrust yourself forward to a new company. Go after what you want. It will build your self esteem and future. Best of luck.

  4. Hmmm…..I left a full time job, then returned part time (to lesser responsibilities as I just wanted the $$ and not the headaches) and found that it was NOT the same. I was asked to resume regular duties (in an unofficial way from coworkers; and declined them, which offended them as this would have lessened their work load.) So, I left. Conclusion: I learned my lesson….you can’t go back and just pick up where you left off. Things (little and big ones) occurred after they sported a good bye event for you, etc., and then you come back???? Big decision for you…especially cross country. Maybe you want the old time warmth from your old job (not meant to be unkind); and the new job is just that “a job”.

  5. As long as you know the reason you want to go back to your old job what does it matter what anyone else thinks? It’s your life and people might judge you but you are an adult and capable of changing your mind.
